Making soft cheese - what type of cheesecloth?

aspenh, Aug 20, 7:31am
or can i use any soft cotton?

Anything that will let the whey drip out will work - best thing I found is babies nappies (preferably new and un-used ... ).

Nice! Thanks - lol can you still buy cloth nappies - do you mean the old fluffy ones? ! My kids are older now

I bought some cheese cloth type ones about 3 years ago - and still use them - for cheese only though ... the "kids" are in the paddock :)

use a "chux" cloth that has been boiled in a pot for 5mins then dried good for straining jelly too

I've just made a fresh cheese with yoghurt & I strained through muslin

I'm probably bad for doing this but I use paper towels inside a sieve! Only because I keep forgetting to get cheese cloth! :)

uli, Aug 22, 7:26am
How do you get the paper off the cheese?
I tried that once it was VERY unsuccessful ...

Lol, from the sounds of it pure luck! It just peels right off, so far anyway! I've made a version of mascarpone cheese with them and it was fine (very nice flavoured with lemon zest)!
I can't remember what I've made in the past but I've made other soft cheeses using paper towels too.

Hmmm, now I feel like making more to see if I have a method to it! :)
