Dijon mustard substitute?

I have a recipe that needs dijon mustard but I dont have any. I have Old English Mustard and Whole Grain mustard. Will either of those do?
Thanks!

sophyzippo, what is the recipe for?
I'm presuming that the "Old English Mustard" is a 'hot' one so whilst not the same flavour IMO the whole grain mustard would be the better option of the two choices that you have available, although Dijon mustard is smooth and does not have the crunchiness of any seeds - maybe it depends on which is the better choice- a hot and smooth mustard or a milder and seed-crunchy mustard? ? :-))

Its for a creamy tarragon and mustard sauce for chicken.
I might go the whole grain I think.
Thanks :)

It depends on what the recipe is for, for salad dressings, and sauces, I have used both of those, but if it is the hot type english mustard, use alot less than you would dijon, or you will overspice your dish, and the wholegrain obviously has a different texture, so will change the look and mouthfeel of the dish.

Yes I think that is the right choice for that dish :)

I would go for the whole grain if the choice is between that and nglish mustard. Dijon has quite a distinct taste, but I think it will be fine.
