there is a great 'Cooks Thesaurus' website that I use a lot - here is what it says about substitutes for cardamon:equal parts ground nutmeg and cinnamon OR equal parts ground cloves and cinnamon OR nutmeg OR cinnamon

Cardamom has such a unique flavour that the end product will taste quite different if you substitue another spice. I'd go buy some.

I agree as I make a lot of indian sweets with cardamom. If I did not add it the flavour would not be the same.
