Braised onion recipe please

I've mislaid a old favorite recipe - braised onions. Does anyone have it?

Goes something like, thinly sliced brown onions gently simmered in oil, white sugar and salt for about 10-15 minutes, then drain off any liquid and add brown sugar and white vinegar. But I'm not sure of those ingredients, times etc. Hope someone can help as it is yum and cheap!

Sounds like caramelised onion jam to me.
