I prefer the grey crown pumpkin, but buy it in halves so that I can see the innards.If the colour is bright orange and the seeds have all pulled away completely from the flesh, it's going to be a properly ripe pumpkin.
You can't always tell from the outside and often they're harvested when they're too green and watery.

I like buttercup the hard green skinned pumpkin but only because I like a drier pumpkin, also butternut is used in a lot of recipes too thats the pale one thats shaped like a peanut.

Same as #2 for me also,and roasting it with loads of garlic for the best flavour soup.
