i am wanting to get a wok for some simple stir fry type meals, a friend has recommended a electric wok but would a simple wok and ring be better for a gas hob?

Yes, it is far superior to an electric wok. Go to one of your local Asian suplly stores. You should be able to get the ring and the wok from them.

You need maximum heat for stir fries and anything electric will no doubt be non-stick coated, so will never get hot enough for a good result.
Buy a steel wok from an Asian supermarket and use it on your gas ring.
