Swede instead of carrot in a cake - will it work?

I am thinking that they are of similar texture and equally as sweet so it should work.
Has any one tried it?

you go first.

razell, Jun 4, 12:32am
I have never even made a carrot cake!
I have a big swede sitting in my kitchen and I am not fond of it as a veggie....

rebecca12, Jun 4, 12:38am
I should think so, I have made carrot cake with pumkin and kumera, they have both worked well.

kinna54, Jun 4, 1:15am
You can only try. I have made it using zucchini to bulk out the carrot, when I didn't have quite enough. Let us know the result. Otherwise add your swede to
stews, or soup. I hate swede but tolerate in soup or mince

It's better thought of instead of pumpkin, not carrot. So pumpkin pie.
And if you don't want the swede send it to me! I could live on them.

Swede Souffle

Mash the cooked swede, add 1 tbsp chopped sauted onion, 3 beaten egg yolks and a handful of grated cheese.
Beat 3 egg whites till stiff and fold into swede mixture. Put ina greased dish and bake 180 degrees until golden.

swede and carrot mashed together with a bit of butter ! mmMmm

rainrain1, Jun 4, 3:45am
swede becomes very watery when hot, so your cake would take on a different texture.

deus701, Jun 4, 4:48am
Yes it will. Make sure u grate or finely slice it.

Its the same with German Sauerkraut Chocolate Cake... or Kimchi Chocolate Cake. It may taste fantastic, but you find your friends have all disappeared.

krazy_kat, Jun 4, 7:59am
I make an awesome pumpkin chocolate chip cake - better than a carrot cake any day of the week! The pumpkin is mashed not grated and I would think done the same way that swede would be ok.

Ok - so I made my swede cake......not a big success story!

It was over cooked around the edges and too soft in the middle so when I tried to get it out of the tin the soft middle bit feel out and the bottom remained stuck to the (greased, non-stick) tin.

The edge pieces taste good, almost toffee like. There is a taste of swede but it is not unpleasant however I think carrot is better.I added plenty of mixed spice and cinnamon to the mixture just in case the swede taste came through.

The hens will be happy tomorrow!
