Royal wedding watchers...

All those who are planning to stay up and watch the royal wedding this Friday: what food will you be eating/serving? What are the most quintessentially British dishes you can come up with?
My kids and i will be staying up, so far we have thought about having crumpets, devonshire scones, blini with smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches (except we all hate cucumber!)

We bought the cookbook "Eating Royally" by Darren McGrady who used to be a chef for the Queen and later for the Princess of Wales. He has set out many of the royals' favourite recipes and we will be making one of these (or more). Maybe trifle, maybe treacle tart, haven't decided yet. though the Mint Aero Cheesecake looks interesting too. But the main course will be palatial bangers and mash, brought by one of the guests..
I can see why Prince William wanted chocolate biscuit cake for the royal wedding cake. It's a lush upmarket version of good old fudge cake.
It's a wonder the Windsors are not as wide as they are high, there's so much butter and cream in their recipes. He mentions that Princess Diana liked low-fat versions of some of these - but he only gives us the recipes for the superfatted versions!

We're having a girls party with food nothing like as posh as yours prendy! I was thinking about food last night and also thought of cucumber sandwiches! I'm doing very 70's basic British 'party' food (being a British kid from the 70's myself!) One must have, is the fantastic orange, studded with cheese and pineapple cubes! Was thinking of trying to make mini yorkshire puddings, maybe with a bit of horseradish cream cheese and some thin roast beef shavings (all other food will be usual nibbly fair, chips, dips, crackers, cheese etc - might throw in some pork scratchings and pickled onions too - quintessentially British pub nibbles lol don't think I can go as far as pickled eggs though!!) Can't wait!I'm going to make a chocolate biscuit cake, as Prince William wants one as part of his wedding cake, so we'll have to have one too :) A couple of jugs of Pimms and lemonade of course and lots of bubbles - would love to find some 'Babycham' but I don't think they make it anymore!

I need ideas too please!

pickles7, Apr 22, 7:08pm
"Chocolate mud, Wedding cake"
A "top tier" for the "Heir" will be required. I can tell, they won't be putting that off for too many years.

kay141, Apr 22, 8:04pm
I always understood blinis were Jewish and particularly Russian Jews.

prendy1, Apr 22, 8:48pm
The reason behind the blini is they are on the menu for the actual wedding meal :)

pickles7, Apr 22, 10:41pm
To top the blinis, Cavianne or caviar, which do you think????.

nauru, Apr 22, 10:54pm
You can get a pear cider these days, it would be pretty close to Babycham. I saw it in the supermarket recently.

nauru, Apr 22, 11:03pm
I'm sure that the actual wedding menu is being kept a closely guarded secret with possibly last minute changes.

omg so exciting i am also having a high tea for my english boyfriend....so pleased there are others who are doing the same ...if you dont like cucumber , put cream cheese with it ..really yummy.I'm thinking scones with jam and cream, battenberg cake, cup cakes, savory sandwiches or similar. I found a website called theteapartyclub.com which has some interesting ideas too...have fun everyone

lizab, Apr 23, 1:05am
yummm battenburg cake!!!!!!!!!

prendy1, Apr 23, 3:15am
My blini will just have smoked salmon-don't think the kids will appreciate caviar lol! A wedding cake might be a bit over the top for just 3 of us as well, but maybe macaroons...are neenish tarts very English? Oh, and lashings of ginger beer for the children!

lizab, Apr 23, 3:24am
I'd never seen a neenish tart before I came to NZ from the UK prendy. Jam tarts and lemon curd tarts are very English, so is battenburg cake :)

lizab, Apr 23, 3:25am
lashings of ginger beer = great idea for the kids prendy!!!!

pickles7, Apr 23, 4:06am
Battenberg cake,, what a great idea, may have to take one to bowls to auction off, for Christchurch. [ wedding prezzie] taken care of , phew.

pickles7, Apr 23, 4:09am
I did hear the same about blinis, maybe it was a sick joke , gees then I added Russian caviar. cripes. a bit of an, annus horribilis

lindylambchops1, Apr 23, 4:22am
Hubby just opened a bottle of my homemade ginger beer...OMG!It was so fizzy it exploded everywhere! Can't wait for the wedding either!

Me neither, agree about the jam/lemon curd tarts & battenburg cake. More cakey things are Victoria sponge, swiss roll, maids of honour, almond slice, yorkshire curdtarts and eccles cakes.

mjhonest, Apr 23, 7:31am
pavlova and fish and chips.. kiwi as! :)
