I thought it was a by- product of the refining process

the boys are going through heaps atm for topping on the porridge and i bake as well. so i guess making my own will hopefully save $$. I dont have a sugar thermometer so wondered if others make this successfully.

Bin Inn sure do have golden syrup rivercottage1, so take your empty tin (s) along and fill it/them. I checked on the Thursday before Easter and Bin Inn had golden syrup for $4.00 (or $4.15!) /Kg compared to $6.15 which seems to be the current non-special cheapest price at the supermarkets. That saving of at least $2.00 is, IMO, more worthwhile than having to buy the sugar and spend the time and energy trying to replicate golden syrup as we (and your family!) know it.:-))

Actually, I don't consider $6+ a cheap price for a tin of golden syrup.
