My set of measuring cups has 250ml marked on the bottom of the 1 cup measure, so I would just use a very generous cupful, ie. a full cup plus a tablespoonful or two, and would go by the texture of the mix to assess whether the extra little bit is enough or not.

you could use ordinary cream which has been soured by adding a tsp of either vinegar or lemon juice to it. This mix is runnier than the cultured sour cream in the pottles but would be what was used in older pre 70's recipes

Ironically I only just a couple of days ago measured out sour cream. A 250g tub is just under 200mls. If a recipe calls for 284 ml, I would add 90mls milk along with one tub of sour cream.

Note where the sour cream goes up to in the container. Empty the container into a bowl. Fill the container with water.

Now you know how many mls in the container
