If I cook a stew or similar recipe and put in one whole red hot pepper will it impart the chilli flavor without the heat if I take it out after cooking?Sort of like taking out Bay leaves before serving.

You will still get some of the heat, but not as much as from the same chilli chopped up.

Yes, that should work perfectly. Maybe just poke a couple of holes in the chilli pepper as well, just so a bit of the heat leeches out - the heat lives in the membrane that hold the seeds inside.
