if they have a stale taste, it will transfer through to the overall tste of the Afghan though.

i tend to agree with #3, which would be a fairly expensive waste.
have heard you can "refresh" things like this in the oven.
could you try this while you make the rest of the mixture?

i find cornflakes makes them chewy, ok if you like it that way. weetbix is better

No, have tried that myself and they were horrible. get some fresh ones, they are soooooo worth it.
