Does anyone know if you can buy icing to either spread on or roll on a homemade cake and get it to turn out nice and smooth like a professionally made cake?

All in the baking section of the supermarket, comes in blocks of white icing. You can add food colouring if you would like other colours.
About half way down that page is some pictures and instructions on how to do it.
