Thought it was a timely reminder to keep a friendly messageboard.
Also it reminds us all that the words we post stay there forever and ever and can be quoted back at us at any point that it's appropriate or inappropriate to do so - so we'd better keep them sweet ;)

It's easy to forget when you're alone with your computer screen, as many learn to their detriment when employers track down their doings on their facebook pages ;)
A bit of sleuthing probably goes on here too...I saw part of a new reality TV programme on TV1 tonight about insurance claims and a bloke was insisting the items for his building project had been bought on Trade Me and had not fallen off the back of a truck.

It seems a weird thread for you to have picked to prove your point elliehen....

I wasn't looking for a point to prove...I was searching for a recipe, and in the light of some recent antagonism toward that old bugbear, the packet recipe, my eye was caught by the very moderate nature of the OP.

I wonder if these names mean anything to Aucklanders?Or if they're still around? They're in a 1980s book called 'Across the Bridge- Wonderful Auckland restaurants on both sides of the bridge offer here their best recipes'.

Morning all, have a bit of a cold and feeling a little sorry for myself... work continues to be going well...busy but not too many dramas.... My cleaner has done her first clean... bliss... can't tell you what a weight off my mind that is... I wasn't getting around to it often enough and add that to beating myself up for not getting around to it.. It was weighing heavy on my mind. This weekend I felt such relief.... more than I thought I would. Had a family birthday last weekend but it was over an hours drive away...so a late night... and then back there the next day to see family. Add that to a big bike ride and blah blah blah... felt worse at the end of the weekend than at the beginning...exhausted.... probably the reason for the cold.... sorry for the moan moan moan... but thats me today I am afraid. Taking massive doses of echinacea... hoping I can shake it off.
Have a wonderful day ladies and gents.... And stay outaway from people who make you feel bad or bring out the worst in you.

Favourite husband (better than many restaurants)... who on Saturday night cooked me the cripsy duck dish that Simon Wright from The French Cafe did on Masterchef Masterclass a couple of weeks ago. And he did an amazing job, it tasted and looked wonderful. The mandarin sauce was fabulous, and the duck was amongst the best I've ever had (possibly equalled by one Peking Duck meal we had in Bejing). Very impressed with him, but then, I usually am :)

They sure do elliehen. Cafe 98 ...down Birkenhead way, used to go there often, especally for brunch. Ragazzi in Takapuna was a "haunt" of mine for a number of years...usually every morning ( especially when i was in real estate) for coffee and catch up with dear friends before off to work. Sails restaurant at Westhaven was very special...was taken there for our 4th wedding anniversary ( in my past life LOL) and Mum was looking after Adam who wasabout three months old at the time Killarney St Brasserie...yes many a real estate deal done there! Kermadec...an amazing evening for our staff "do" when i worked for the Jeweller in Mairangi Bay Carpe Diem in Devonport was always great and would often pop in there, especially when Adam was younger. it has now changed to "Manuka" ( I think that's what it is called) was last there a couple of years ago on a visit to Aucks. Cafe' Botannix...yep, that was one frequented. Hotel intercontinental was one....it was very fancy at the time.

I was hoping they'd bring on some feelings of nostalgia for some out here (the kind I'm feeling for my old haunts in Christchurch).I copied and pasted them from the listing of the book, which I've just sold to someone with probably similar connections to the places. It was an interesting book, even for a non-Aucklander, because there were sketches of all the places alongside each recipe.

How to choose ???
I'm a fan of Floriditas in Cuba st,Hummingbird in Courtenay Place,Scopa,Chow and Monsoon Poon.Elements in Lyall Bay is very reliable and I'm looking forward to trying Coco at The Roxy which is near by.
A daughter is vegetarian and when she chooses the venue I realise how well they are catered for these days.
I'm another Dux fan hoping it has survived the ChCh quake, and try to fit in a meal whenever I'm down there.
Great thread charlieb2.

eastie, I was a Dux fan too and remember sharing an enormous platter there with family after a son's graduation ceremony.Sadly, from what I've heard, the Dux has suffered the same fate as all the tenants of the Arts Centre - and is no more.
Maybe someone from Christchurch will come in and update?

Hey eastie!!!
The Dux is indeed closed and the lease has been terminated or whatever its called, I believe.
There is a big campaign under way to 'save the dux'If you want to get more info:
Duo in Invercargill.Last time I had to force myself not to have their delicious pork steak yet again, so went for the lamb instead. No surprise that it was every bit as good.Their meals come with proper vegetables, not a handful of leaves and fries.
My favourite dessert came from Fleurs at Moeraki. Ginger poached rhubarb. That's why I'm here--to look for an answer about the rhubarb, but I got sidetracked on this thread.

Would love to go to Fleur's one day when I do the next big southern road trip.I saw the TV documentary on her and have heard her interviewed on Nat Radio.Quite a character as well as a fabulous cook!

We went years ago, but I think the restaurant has been extended since then.we had a fantastic meal there - the weather was appalling.I think it was the first time we ever came to NZ on holiday probably in 1995 I think.

elliehen, I highly reccommend Fleur's, the food is soo good, and the fish so fresh, am feeling hungry just thinking about it! Prior to Fleur's placeshe had a fab restaurant in Clyde called Olivers, which was equally as good, and she was very sadly missed when she left.

I put this in the new Food Blogs thread, but thought Mrs Cake's question might get an answer here...from http://www.mrscake.co.nz/
A recent blog entry from Mrs Cake says: "Though I love Indian food I think Great India is the only Indian food I've tried in Wellington (our own kitchen excluded). My favourite haunt in Christchurch was Taste of Bengal on Riccarton Road - I don't know it fared in the quakes - it was in a pretty old row of shops, and the lovely gentleman who ran it lived above with his family, so though I very much hope for the best I wouldn't be suprised if it's no longer there. Can any Christchurch people enlighten me? Where do you go when you want a good curry? "
Does anyone have the answer?

Fleur's is fabulous and we often go there on our frequent trips South from Christchurch but last August when I wanted to take an overseas guest I learnt that it now pays to book no matter what day, whatever weather or anything else. Fortunately we did get a table and on the way out Fleur told me that it was time for something new and that she was looking at opening a restaurant in the old and abandoned 'whiskeyworks' in Oamaru. It was going to be quite different to Fleurs with an almost Medieval type theme. As she spoke she certainly had a detailed vision of it and it sounded exciting. I said that I was a little surprised by her choice and I can't remember how many tour buses and huge number of people passed through each day but it was a considerable number.

cntd I see in the Sunday Star Time's Food and Wine review (E22) that 'The Loan and Merc' Oamaru features and it sounds fabulous and is shaping up already to be uniquely in true Fleur style. Meet you there elliehen!
