Huge apology everyone, real life got in the way a bit.there are three recipes in my grand mothers recipe I can identify from the Lilac. There could be one or two more but in some places the writing is badly faded.
This is the first - its a sponge cake recipe.

I apologise in advance - it is just the ingredients - there is no method, I guess she just knew what to do.
so
Four Eggs
1 heaped cup flour
2 tspn cream of tartar
1 tspn baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 tbspn butter
3 tbspn milk.

Thats all thats written.

The other recipe I can easily see is for a Christmas cake. Will decipher it and post for you.It looks to have both long list of ingredients and method.
Will also find the third recipe and write up.

cheers
Fey

Hi who remembers the most amazing ever German baker who owned the Lilac bakery in Broadbank mall in Napier!

korbo, Aug 9, 9:37am
x2
didnt know there had been one in napier. in the 70's there was one out in hastings opposite the new world, they made these amazing green frogs and my adult kids still talk about them, and the chocolate gautos(sp) were to die for.
oh for those olden day cake shops... like batternberg cake, i remember that so well from an old auntie, who always took me to a shop in Palm nth, at holidays. i would have a glass of milk and a peice of that cake. never see it now.

Yes that was the one. Yes he had two stores, both Napier and Hastings. The last few years he made amazing lemon logs dipped in chocolate each end. They were not his marzipan logs. Anyway they were filled with a beautiful light lemon filling! ! ! !

My grandmother worked there. I inherited a pile of her recipes which included several from the Lilac Bakery. And one or two others around Hastings she worked at.

Korbo, come for a break in Wellington - the Strathmore Bakery in Strathmore still does brilliant Battenberg cakes. Some with one end dipped in dark chocolate.

Hi Fey... would you like to share some of those recipes... would so appreciate them, have so many fond memories of the Lilac bakery. Kindest regards Wendy

I remember the one in Hastings back in the late 80s. My mother used to buy these ultra-yummy meatball things there.

susan21, Aug 11, 6:58am

soden, Aug 11, 9:31am

I am happy to dig them out - probably over the weekend - I have to be a little careful, the recipe book is absolutely falling apart and to me that is just as precious as the recipes themselves. Will let you know which ones I find. Fair warning... . . its all butter and cream! I haven't tried many or converted any to more modern recipes.

johne21, Aug 12, 2:56am
Thanks so much fey looking forward to trying them

korbo, Aug 12, 9:51am
yeah, forgot the meatballs, i agree, no-one makes them like they did. if we could get some recipes wouldnt that be lovely

soden, Aug 13, 12:18am
I am so happy to have started this post. Better start exercising in advance ready for all the extra butter and cream kilos!

fey, Aug 13, 2:21am
Perhaps I should warn in advance that I think some of the recipes make like a hundred of something!

purplegoanna, Aug 13, 4:41am

Ok, the next one I found is for cheese straws.

Again it has ingredients but no method:

2 oz butter
3 oz flour
3 oz cheese
quarter tspn cayenne
Quarter tspn baking powder.

Nothing else.
