I am going to try to only shop one big shop per month or fortnight, and then just do without if i run out - where is the cheapest place to shop in your opinions?

tipsy_bl0nde, Jun 22, 3:41pm
countdown if you get homebrand and whats on special. paknsave is crap quality in my opinion

tonsta2, Jun 22, 3:48pm
Thats what i always thought but my 2 aunties were raving about it y

raewyn64, Jun 22, 3:48pm

Count 'n Save

245sam, Jun 22, 4:22pm
IMO Pak n Save is generally the cheapest but Countdown has the bigger range of choices re brands, etc. :-))

sandhu, Jun 22, 4:22pm
I shop atcountdown is the best place to shop. .

chrisynz, Jun 22, 4:44pm
countdown, better variety

karenz, Jun 22, 4:50pm
I feel pretty disloyal but I actually do not like shopping at Pak n Save, they have miles of aisles filled with bulk amounts of the same stuff and really limited variety, plus their meat is very poor quality. If you buy, for example 3 steaks you find the middle one is a lot smaller than the other 2 and they are crammed together to look as though they are equal and to disguise the fac that they are very thinly sliced. Countdowns home brands are very good too, especially the pet food.

Definately Countdown, They have good specials, (one card is good to have) Pak n Save meat isn't greatest quality, and if your'e doing a big shop the last thing you feel like doing is packing your own groceries! !

katalin2, Jun 22, 5:19pm
Countdown- makes the shopping experience more pleasant- better quality all around.

I find they do vary allot but for me Paknsave Albany is my store though I buy my veg in the Vege shops out Kumeu way on my way to and from work. Shopping that way does work if you are strict on yourself and plan well. The key to is to pick a supermarket that suits your needs then stick with it and establish a pattern of shopping. But take major advantage on specials on meat and veg (specials on luxury items aren't specials as you just eat more in the first week.

I have been shopping at pak n save for ages and just swtiched to countdown as its more convenient, I don't think its any dearer but its nicer and better choice, I think I'm happy to switch to countdown for good. with the onecard savings and vouchers you get I think its probably better value at countdown.

wheelmann, Jun 22, 6:53pm
I find Pak n Save cheaper, but less variety. But I often have a pretty simple shopping list so it's not too much of a worry. Foodtown, which I guess is moving to become a Countdown, is easiest for me to get (by bus).

I never buy meat or fish from the supermarket. My local butcher is great and cheaper. I don't have a vege shop near my bus route otherwise I would buy from there instead of a supermarket.

I prefer to shop at Countdown. I have saved more there than at Pak n save.

PnS is cheaper overall, but I guess its what you buy that helps you save money...

Homebrand is a damn good brand.

griffo4, Jun 23, 7:47am
We have been shopping at PNS for 24yrs on a monthly basis and it has saved us heaps over those years and is more convenient for us
and we buy fresh fruit and vegies when we need them in our local town

Pak N Save , its cheaper and its NZ owned, Countdown is Australian owned, keep the profits in NZ hands

tehenga288, Jun 23, 12:27pm
Pak n Savestores are all privately owned so each store has a different owner, they are not usually publicly listed so there are not too many profits being spread around. I prefer Countdown because of the variety & PnS often doesnt have small quantities. I agree their meat is not too good but alot depends on which one you shop at.

nzhel, Jun 23, 12:38pm
Pak & Save is usually the 'winner' for the cheapest prices thru out NZ in the annual shopping survey conducted by the Consumer.

biker_69, Jun 23, 1:12pm
Pak'n'Save for anything branded (i. e. not meat or produce, just groceries). They have everything you need. They might not have it in every possible brand but they have enough to chose from. I find the prices at Countdown horrendous, especially the meats. I go to a butcher for meat (not the Mad butcher though - his stuff is rubbish like Pak'n'Save) and fruit & veges I get from the local greengrocer.

Year right so small businesses do not benefit NZ economy, NOT!

janetta, Jun 23, 1:52pm
Oh to have the choice, we have New world or 4 Square, but do use PnS if in the city

rolznsp, Jun 23, 2:43pm
I was always a backer of Countdown - then when the bill started creeping up to 200+ i decided to give Pak n Save a go after hearing my mum rave. . and i must say i will never go back to countdown for our big weekly shop. I only go for specials now. AND you get to serve yourself and pack yourself at pak n save. :P

motorbo, Jun 23, 3:15pm
yup pack in save for bulk cheap shops, then go to the others for the variety and specials

mone, Jun 23, 3:17pm
Countdown used to be the bargain outlet for Progressive Supermarket chain, but now they are converting Foodtowns into Countdowns so countdowns prices will shoot up
