What do you feed teenagers (and their friends)

on a Saturday night? Mac and Cheese, nachos - any other suggestions? Bit sick of pizza. Thanks in advance.

buzzy110, Aug 15, 12:41pm
Are you talking about a meal or just snacks?

Is it just junk food, like the items you have listed, you want suggestions for?

kirmag, Aug 15, 12:47pm
just junk food? Mac and cheese and nachos are junk food?

Op - yeh those 2 are good, maybe a pasta bake, chicken nibbles and chips, sausages, bread and chips. Wraps with different fillings.

battgirl, Aug 15, 12:54pm
Saturday night is usually a bit of an affair in our house because I actually have time during the day to dig through my cookbooks for something flash, but if you're talking about feeding them on days you don't have the time/energy then my go-to is always the family favourite "mince and pasta surprise" (a conconction of mince, grated carrot and grated zuchhini fried up together then worcestershire sauce, tomato paste and a tub of sour cream added before the whole thing is mixed through spiral pasta, topped with cheese and bunged in the over to brown up) or a chicken curry with pre-made sauce (we like the Tulsi packets in the fridge at the supie). Both can be whipped up in less than 30mins. Otherwise, loaded wedges or pulled pork wraps (I put the pork roast in a crock pot at lunch time with a gravy mix and whatever sauces I feel like, and it's ready to fall apart and hop into a wrap with lettuce, grated carrots and cheese by 6pm).

make your own burgers, just get all the different fillings/sauces ready and line it up and they construct their own burger

buzzy110, Aug 15, 1:28pm
Don't see any vegetables in any of the suggestions so far. Meals made up mainly of carbs, especially high starch carbs like pasta, pizza and nachos unrelieved by vegetables and other nutrient dense food really are junk food imo.

What do you call junk food?

battgirl, Aug 15, 1:41pm
Pssst. I sneak carrots and zuchinni's (and sometimes even mushrooms) into my Mince and Pasta Suprise as above. Hence the "surprise".

kirmag, Aug 15, 1:43pm
Chips, chocolate, lollies.

Not home cooked meals, esp ones where veges can easily be added.

And it's a Saturday night for teenagers. Nothing wrong with a filling meal for hungry teenagers, easy to make, and 1 night a week. imo.

strowan1, Aug 15, 1:52pm
Lasagne with garlic bread, home made sausage rolls. For the vegetable police, the old favourite Kai si Ming. Endorse the 'make your own burger idea' teens love that. Chicken tenders and fried rice. If you are thinking of doing a dessert, maybe a big chocolate brownie and ice cream?

janbodean, Aug 15, 1:55pm
FGS. There always has to be one "holier than thou" on here. Don't think the OP was looking for a lecture on nutrition, just a few suggestions. If you feel unable to contribute any perhaps you should keep your judgements to yourself. How do you know that the dishes cited are standard meals in this household? Perhaps they're once a week treats. Either way it's not for you to judge.

strowan1, Aug 15, 2:07pm
Sadly it's what we see this poster do time and again. Why the need to regularly rain on a parade heaven only knows.

buzzy110, Aug 15, 3:26pm
That's OK. I was just asking to ensure I didn't make suggestions that were not acceptable. It is best to narrow it down and clarify so that only ideas that meet with approval are submitted.

buzzy110, Aug 15, 3:31pm
Calm down sweetie. I was responding to another poster. I would not even have mentioned vegetables if she hadn't of made the post she did. In fact I didn't until she specifically queried my question. I am not judging. If it is junk food she wants then obviously my suggesting other things is not going to go down well is it?

I did have a few ideas but I see they are not a good fit so just as well I asked isn't it.

buzzy110, Aug 15, 3:34pm
Read my other posts in this thread. That comment was totally uncalled for. And where, in the past 2 years have you seen any posts from me that fit what you are saying?

I know, because I asked, not to make any suggestions. Does that make you happy?

However, I was thinking along the lines of bacon and egg pie or quiche if the OP is even remotely interested.

Make a one pot of beef curry, or chow mien. self help . keep it simple,

ruby2shoes, Aug 15, 4:56pm
cottage pie, smoked fish pie, toasted sammies, vegetarian lasagna (veg thinly sliced don't need to be pre cooked), stir fry. so darn quick

socram, Aug 15, 6:12pm
How many? Boys or girls or both?

Chilli con carne with rice and/or potatoes baked in their jackets with whatever you want to serve with it. ie sour cream, butter, baked beans etc.

We'd tend to concentrate on food where the leftovers can be used.

At this time of the year, I'd be big on soups and bread - and we all know how much bread a teenaged boy can put away.

ruby19, Aug 15, 7:00pm
Kebabs are good. Bowls of shredded lettuce, grated carrots & cheese, hummus, tatziki, chili sauce, falafels, shredded meat sauted in moroccan spices. Lay a piece of foil down lay tortilla, and fill as liked. wrap up,in foil, and toast in sandwich press. Could serve with homemade wedges or sav rice.
Tonight we had tortilla pie, corn esquites with added avo and home made wedges. A big hit.
Thai curries, are easy, especially with all great pastes around. Bake some spring rolls to accompany.

sarahb5, Aug 15, 7:16pm
How old and how fussy are we talking? Good opportunity for them to cook for you but why is Saturday night any different from any other night of the week

patsy3, Aug 15, 7:17pm
1.Lasagne, garlic bread and huge green salad or
2. Burgers and chips
Most teens I know would eat that, and believe it or not they do like salad.
Burgers, if you have vegetarians, as you could do vege patties.

sarahb5, Aug 15, 7:42pm
And for the vegetable-phobic teens you can hide loads of vegetables in lasagne

strathview, Aug 15, 9:25pm
One loaf toast oaten bread. One large egg beaten, one good sized can of creamed corn, one small finely diced onion or shallot, a few slices of bacon, and Colby cheese. Mix up and spread on the bread and bake in the oven at 180 for approx 20 to 30 minutes. Can be eaten hot or cold and disappear very quickly. Chopped into triangles they are a great finger food.

moparpete, Aug 16, 9:37am
Butter chicken with basmati rice along with poppadums.Hit in our house.

mbos, Aug 16, 10:10am
Chicken lasagne, with salad and garlic bread, or a curry and rice would be my picks. Or home made hamburgers?

rop, Aug 16, 12:25pm
Let them barbeque sausages, chicken etc and have salads and bread.
