but perfect for low carbers -yes!, esp. those that drone on about eating what our ancestors ate, as they did eat their placenta

Well to me this is not that gross :-) I chose to not eat my placentas but don't think there is anything wrong with it if people do! What harm can there be!

There's harm when it becomes a sought-after commodity and there's a trade.
There's also the question of the health of the placenta. If you're sending your placenta to a cottage kitchen for processing, how can you be sure you're getting your own placenta products back!
"The placenta supplies oxygen and nutrients to the fetus during pregnancy and allows fetal waste to be disposed of via the mother's kidneys. But placentas can be infected during labour or carry viruses such as hepatitis B or HIV from the mother, doctors said."

It seems to me to be on the same level as a book I read a while back where the mother became a bit "odd" and started drinking a lovely concoction of phlegm and urine to help her get rid of a chesty cough. It wasn't fiction, it was the mother of a quite famous (or should that be "infamous") NZer, but I won't say who.

I always liked the taste of Irish Moss cough mix, don't think I could be tempted with the phlegm/urine mix even if it belonged to George Clooney or Sean Connery!

I have, 1 week short of 19 years ago my miss was born at home and I started to haemorrhage, the choices I had were to go to hospital or eat a slither of placenta, within seconds the bleeding stopped.Usually I prefer steak but it was better than going to hospital.

Why does eating placenta stop bleeding!

Back to OP; yes it is cannibalism. Any eating of human flesh is. In my opinion it is not okay unless you are starving. Where would you draw the line!

I would have opted for going to hospital - they're not that bad, and what if chomping on your placenta hadn't worked, you'd still be at home and still haemorrhaging.
I was in a situation once where I approached some people who had stolen meat from anothers freezer. I will never ever forget the look on their faces when I asked if I could at least have the placenta back. They all looked ill & said in chorus - WHAT PLACENTA. The placenta had been placed in the freezerto await burial. I never got the placenta back but the thieves were holding their stomachs & looking very ashen when I left.

Sounds like some old hippies doing the communal cook-up so the kid is part of the community. Not a "common practice" at all in the general population LOL :)

My body expelled it. Like everything else my body expels I see no good reason to put it back in.

Some people drink their morning urine and think it is healthy. I would gag on that .
