eww who else is watching this on TV 1! what are your thoughts! is this classed as canabalism!

I'll stick with the Auckland obstetrician/gynaecologist who said it's a cottage industry which comes and goes over the years and there have been no scientific studies proving its worth.
For those who say other mammals do it, he made a good point - other mammals also eat their young and reject extra babies when there are too many to feed!
However, he also said that he wouldn't advise against it, unless the conditions under which the pills are made were less than safe and not up to OSH standards, because it's basically meat.
Edited to add: I think the placenta tree paintings are pretty, although the dehydrated umbilical cord heart was a bit gross ;)

I was trying to eat my lamb chops while that was on, and I had trouble getting them down, I must admit it's absolutely gross.Blerk!Yuk.Can't imagine even wanting to eat something like that if I was on death's door through starvation. No thank you.Not for me.But then again, maybe they are quite nice medium rare if they have been marinated!

I would if I was on deaths door, but I really couldn't see myself doing it. I have no qualms however, if others want to do it. just don't make me watch!

Actually I think if I was on death's door, death would be preferable.

Wild animals eat the placenta to remove the smells and signs of birth (vulnerable prey)
kuaka,

Yes, and they ignore the weak and sickly young, and leave them to die.Mostly we don't do that.

Never saw the program but I do have a recipe for placenta soup tucked away somewhere. We planted a tree on top of our childrens placentas, Much easier alternative.

I find the whole idea quite revolting.I've just heard a midwife speaking to Kerre Woodham, she said she went to a house where they were cooking the placenta and couldn't go inside as the stench was so disgusting.

For anyone who missed it and wants to watch it, here's the video.Be warned! There is a lot of blood, but it looks very much like liver.
Placenta face cream has been around for ages. Its supposed to give your skin a youthful, supple look.

Putting the stuff on your face once it's been processed is one thing, eating it is another.

The raw placenta smoothie (made from someone else's placenta) was the turning point for me - stomach-turning point, that is!

I am so pleased I missed this!

I sent this email to closeup tonight:
"Shame on you, Walrus. Having an item on placentas and oysters in the same programme, during dinner hour is rather outrageous. My next number one food group for this week will be; Oysters.I thank god the processing-placenta-lady had a Kenwood on the bench and not a KitchenAid.
cheers"

1)Predators eat raw meat anyway 2)The herbivores - not all do - do it to remove the attraction of predators.
people who do it should have the men in white coats round.
They eat their toenail clippings to! Get a limb amputated and eat that too! Bonkers.

Cows eat their placenta and so do some of the sheep
ln my opinion if you want to then go ahead but no need to advertise it Each to their own

So, great ad for the service offered! Went on far too long. 'Each to their own', gets said. IMO an OK trend for the trend followers but gross information for general TV viewers.

Well id do it, if they were in pill form that is, i have no qualms about it, if anyone had an issue it would be their issue not mine. If/when i have children and manage to be in the situation, ill look inot it further.

Placenta's look like slab's of liver. I dont eat liver, but I guess if you want to, then go for it. I think it's pretty disgusting, personally. But to those cultures that do, it's a normal practice. But hey, whats normal! But I would digest the pills - and where does the placenta come from to make the pills!, do women sell it!
vintagekitty,
Mar 7, 7:52am
I dont think its going to start a trend somehow!, but really there's worse things to put into your body than placenta. There are already woman who do cook it, so it's nothing new at all.
purplegoanna,

nup you can send your own placenta to a midwife! down the line somehwere who dehydrates it, grinds it down adds a few other things and puts it into capsules for a fee.

oh ok, I have no spare placenta in the freezer right at this minute so looks like I wont be trying it!
