The James Cook is the best buffet in town, but you pay for it.Great location with parking, good ambiance, nice views and the food is quality and usually a good selection. So its worth paying a few dollars more.

Can anyone reccommend anything. Just for a birthday for a family member - in total for about 20 people including kids.

Angus Inn in Lower Hutt do a buffet... thats the only one I can think of.... oh yes you could try the James Cook Hotel - they do a buffet in their restaurant too but unfortunately i can't remember the name of the restaurant inside the James Cook..... what else? I don't recommend Valentines in Petone - blergh. There might be another couple of hotels that also do a buffet but the Angus Inn is really really nice if you are willing to travel to Lower Hutt

we go to James Cook - as with any buffet, the food is a bit variable, but it works well for our family functions- the kids can eat immediately

The James Cook, is that the one right in town way up on like the 18th floor? We went there, and I nearly couldn't cope lol (being a small town girl) I could feel the building swaying!Food was quite good for a buffet, but they were really busy with some cruise, or bus tour thing.I think I heard it was $45 a head?I bought a wine which I think was $9 and not a flash lable, I nearly died lol.Think I'll stay in Southland :-)

Try the Fisherman's table in Oriental Bay, Best view in town and not too expensive.

I used to work at Valentines in Petone. DO NOT go there. I wouldn't even eat anything when I worked there, after all i saw behind the kitchen doors. And it is highly expensive. Fisherman's Table is nice, and good price.

For $25 - $35 a head you may be best looking at an Asian restaurant.I generally find them a lot cheaper and if you get a banquet you don't have to keep going up and getting your own food.

Actually I was just looking up Fisherman's Table and came across this "Set menus available for 10 or more guests priced from $25 to $33 per head, or priced to your budget."As Beaumonde said the view is great and while it's not exactly gourmet food we have never had a bad meal there and our kids love it as do the older members of the family.
