told me (some time back now) the easy way to cook rice with the finger method.I had been thinking about getting a rice cooker but am glad I came in here, and haven't got yet another appliance cluttering up my kitchen. Thanks again to you all.

Finger method?

When you wash the rice and put it in a pot and add enough cold water to reach up to the first knuckle of your finger when you rest finger on top of the rice.Bring to boil then cover tightly and let it steam.I usually let mine cook about 4-5 mins before turning off because I'm on gas and it doesn't hold heat like an element would. I put tinfoil under pot lid to try to keep the steam in.

that's how we used to cook our rice...
but I would never be without my rice cooker now - I've lost count of the number of times I've burnt rice, cos I've been distracted or forgotten to turn it down - or turn it off even lol

Thank you - I will try that.

ive always just doubled water to cups of rice. bring to a boil until rice looks like the waters absorbing into it and then turn the element off and put a lid on done pretty quickly comes out beautiful each time. i use jasmine rice so dont know if this applies to all.

Years ago I bought a simple rice cooker that you use in the microwave. It was cream coloured with a red lid. They are great! But I don't think you can get them anymore. They'e not too big either, just like a bowl really than a large appliance. You see the odd one at an op shop. They really do make a good job with rice so long as you have the recipe for rice/water ratio, so if you need it I can give it to you!

Whats wrong with using a cup? 1 cup rice - 2 cups water - whatever size the cup is ... always works. No problems with short or long fingers - or even wide or high pots ...

No need to drain it. It is the absorption method - you use only enough water to cook it (the rice totally absorbs the water). You have to wash the rice before cooking it.

You have to wash the rice first.

Yes that sounds like a good method as well.Might try that next time and see if the water still hits first knuckle.

I have got something like that but have gone off it as it always seems to leak out the lid and end up sitting in a pool of rice water.

The person who gave you that advice alimick was snipz and it is absolutely the best way to figure out how much liquid to rice you need to cook perfect rice every time.

I know sophie gray method---- is boil water in pot, add rice, boil for 11 mins then rinse, perfect rice everytime and no real need to measure :)I agree about forgetting its on the stove tho....thank heavens for oven timers!
