Hey fisher ... horseradish!

winnie231, Aug 15, 5:44am
just wondered - what's your secret to growing horseradish & can it happen in a big tub?
Planning ahead for spring ... going to share the work & produce in Mum's garden and grow a few select things for myself in pots at the new pad like herbs, salad greens & toms. I've never had any success with horseradish but know you have!
Help me make it happen please ...
Loved the dried stuff you sent me last year by the way ... Thanks! ! !

winnie231 - yes very easy in a tub - if you have enough fertilizer.

I guess fisher will be in shortly to give a detailed growing scheme - but yeah - water and fertilizer is the big thing...

Followed by making sure you have not too many side shoots - as that will make the main root smaller and more difficult to peel.

If no-one else has any info I can come in later and tell you how to achieve that - if you like my advice... that is ...

Most pieces of horseradish will grow. .compost, npk fertiliser, blood and bone mixed into soil a few days before hand. . remove "some" of the side shoots and "hairs"and plant on a 45 degree angle to the ground level. . Water in and basically forget about it. . when is sprouts, and the shoots are about 3-4 inches high. . I put a handful of homemade compost around the base. .
I dont peel my horseradish, rather simply grate it (outside in the fresh air) using only the amount I want... If you leave it in this state it will simply get hotter and hotter and to stop this process, use white vinegar ... you can then make your homemade horseradish sauce. . any unwanted dug up roots can be stored in a plastic bag in the vege crisper drawer of your fridge. . I recently planted some which were near on 18 months old and they grew... The tops have now died off and I normally have a nosy after the second season. .

Great - thanks both of you!

Fisher - you know I luv ya anyway ... but I bet I'd luv ya even more if a wee piece of horseradish root lands in the next care package ... subtle hint ... ;)

Otherwise where do I get a piece? Can I plant a bit I've bought at the local organic shop?

Winnie. . some of the Garden Centres sell plants... ring about... around 3 bucks in a punnet with tops already sprouted. . more in the summer season tho is when it sprouts up and they will have them. . octoberish... you really want two or three pieces to hedge your bets... I grew some in a 1950's galv tin baby bath. . remember them:}. . Just about pure garden compost and it kept it contained and the leaves look quite neat. .

Here it is... Its got my looseleaf winter lettuce in it at the mo...
My horseradish is now in a corner of the garden that is hard to access so not really good for planting anything else there. . funny was just cleaning up around that area today

Cool - thanks for the info.
Mum has Oderings Garden Centre over her back fence so I'll check with them.
Once I've got the apartment sussed, I'll start collecting containers for planting my mini garden in. There's a big recycling centre here in Chch - I'm sure I'll find some useful things there!

Love the bath! ! !

Love all those greens in the foreground, but fisher, do you really want to grow that spiny succulent in the pot by the wall? They grow to the size of a small house and have postively lethal spines. They are only good for planting as a prowler deterrent under a bedroom window!

My darlink sweetie says it is 3-4 years old and will stay small because she put it in that small pot. . anyways I'm the vege department. . shes the decor department. . she is EXTREMELY well versed in succulents. . they are EVERYWHERE here... :}

... I think fisher would be more concerned with folks wanting to climb in his kitchen window with all the good kai moana he cooks up! ! !

I planted horseradish years ago and now can't get rid of it! ! ! ! Love it though - however it does spread in the garden, kind of like how mint spreads if you know what I mean :)

fisher, Aug 16, 4:12am
Lol . . Lizab. . It does take over in some places. .
how about diggin me and winnie up some good size stuff and you ship us some. . happy to pay. . :}

That's a huge palm trunk, bird of paradise and agave plants that are now a lot bigger. . I'm sure those wee little ones wont do us any harm...
