Saffron - How To Tell the Genuine From The Fake ?

indy95, Aug 2, 11:35pm
Could anyone give me some advice about this please ?

davidt4, Aug 2, 11:56pm
Buy thread saffron, not powder. Although the threads can be faked, you are only likely to run across fake threads in tourist-oriented markets in the Middle East and North Africa.

The NZ saffron is genuine and very good.

Thank you davidt4. Do you recommend any particular brand ?

I haven't bought any for a while because I brought a great big jar back from Madrid. I used to buy it from my local Middle Eastern food market (Khyber Spice Traders) and it was Iranian. It wasn't that expensive - about $3. 75 for enough for about three dishes.

I buy the Hawkes Bay Terraza Saffron. The difference is noticeable. You only get the saffron filaments whereas in powdered form, you often get the stle as well which adds no flavour. This also adds t weight, so you are, in fact paying alot of money for very little pure product. Their saffron syrup is delicious too. They are at http://www.terrazasaffron.co.nz/

What I like about the Terraza Saffron is that they only sell the current seasons harvest, therefore, you get something fresh rather than something that has sat around for months on end deteriorating over that time. The threads in the small pack should do you for about 20 dishes.

Where do you get your supply? I've only seen Mfoods @ around $8 for a small amount.

Thank you for your help. There doesn't seem to be anyone here who stocks the Terraza brand but I can get it from Moore Wilsons next time I am in Wellington.

Isn't there a Moore Wilsons in Masterton? A bit closer to Palmy than Welly and a nice saturday drive.

nfh1, Aug 4, 4:26am
Yes there is a Moore Wilsons there, I have seen it. Is it a wholesaler, public shop or just both?

nala2, Dec 24, 5:10pm
It is both, when you go to the check-out they will ask you if you have a Moore Wilsons Card, all you have to do is say is "no". The card gives discounts on selected products depending on amount spent over a given period, you will not be missing out on anything in my opinion. They have a great selection of goods although Wellington is better.
