mschicca, I have bought cheesecakes but I can assure you that IMO there is no comparison between a bought cheesecake and a homemade cheesecake and cheesecakes are NOT difficult, nor hugely time consuming, to make - until I made my first one many years ago I thought they were too difficult to make and something that only 'clever' cooks could do but that is soooo not the case so... . . can I urge you to give making a cheesecake a try. IMO cheesecakes, like many other dishes/desserts, benefit from being made ahead of time (a day or two) and many also freeze well. Here's the recipe for the very first cheesecake that I made, and it's also a recipe that I've used many times since - it's as it appeared on Trademe cooks
"Heavenly Cheesecake always popular whenever I make it so I hope you will enjoy it too. Crumb Crust: 1 packet plain biscuits (crushed), 170g butter (melted). Combine the biscuits & butter, then spread evenly into a 22·5cm (9”) springform tin and up the sides. Chill while preparing the Filling:1 tbsp gelatine, 250g cream cheese, 3/4 cup sugar, 3 eggs, 1/4 cup each of water, lemon juice & milk, pinch salt. Blend the gelatine with the water & lemon juice, then set it aside. Combine the cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar, beaten egg yolks, milk & salt. Cook over simmering water for 10 minutes, then blend in the gelatine mixture. Cool the mixture. Beat 3 egg whites, gradually adding the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, until soft peaks form. Fold this into cheese mixture and pour the filling carefully into crumb crust. Refrigerate. If desired, pile whipped cream on top & serve as a dessert or as a cake with coffee. This is nicest at least 1 day old, & freezes well too. "
If you really MUST have a bought cheesecake, then IMO they're all much the same with no one cheesecake being better than any other and I have tried (not necessarily here but been served elsewhere) both the packeted versions and the frozen cheesecakes e. g. Home Brand and ? ? Sara Lee, I think they were. :-))

They really are so easy to make... honestly, the look more difficult than they are. I prefer a baked cheesecake as opposed to one made with gelatine and served cold.

Good on ya 245sam for encouraging new folks to pursue new journeys... Hope they take the time to make one as per your recipe above and find a new depth of taste and flavour than store bought... :}

If you just don't have time and have to buy one then we've found the Homebrand cheesecakes are extremely nice - far better than the more expensive brands. I prefer their French Cheesecake the best as well. Ultimately you can't beat homemade tho!
