Mum got me a breville stick blender from flybuys couple of years ago, couldn't even handle some frozen berries in a smoothie first time I used it, it broke! Got a replacement guess what it broke! Im still using the third one I got but I am very careful on what I use it on, it makes a horrendous noise too. I wouldn't recommend breville brand.

These little gadgets are pretty specialised/limited in what they can realistically be used for.I've tried to chop nuts with mine but it wasn't very successful. Probably best to stick to what it does best and get another gadget for other things.

Stick blenders are not for hard items of food! They are to be used once you have cooked the food ( such as your carrots, peas, potatoes etc.) The blender is then applied to basically puree the food. If i was going to have one, i would choose Bamix personally. I have a Kitchenaid blender which does basically the same thing, so the stick blender is not really a priority. it is called a blender because it does just that.

If you get one make sure the shaft isn't plastic cos you want to put it into hot food.

Magic bullet kind of blenders work fantastic for frozen berries and to smoothie things. Also it has a grinder you can use to grind spices and coffee.

I've got a George Forman one - comes with other attatchments and it's got a POWERFUL motor - more powerful that most of the stand alone blenders that were for sale!

Looked at the Bamix at Chef's Hat in Aussie - you are looking at between AUD $245 and AUD $350 depending on the model. Bamix is the only one I would have-although, I would have the Kitchenaid when it finally arrives in NZ- they are not here in Aussie yet,but have been told at the trade fair that they are coming.

I've got a Braun which works well, but any stick blender will stall and overheat if you give it a job that's too hard for it.

It's also recommended that before you puree, you pour off the excess liquid and then return it to the mix after you've got the mash. That way you'll do an easier job and won't burn yourself with boiling splashes.

I had a DISASTER with mine when I first bought it!I thought it would blend up ice into my smoothies. so I blended the smoothie (shake), stuck the ice in, and away I went. WELL. I had frozen berry bits, and juice ALL over ME, the WALLS and the CEILING. LOL, I laughed till I cried and put the damn thing back into the box where it's sat ever since! The woman in the store assured me it would crush ice.I then bought a lovely blender (with the glass jug) which works wonders on iced smoothies.

I love my stick blender. It's the second one I've had as the previous one hit a teaspoon buried in the pumpkin soup, then went on strike.

Looked at the Bamix today at the trade fair. They have a number of models, a basic, a deluxe and one with a wet and dry bowl which you can chop nuts, hard vegetables like carrots etc. The also have a Gordon Ramsay signature series which includes a DVD featuring GR. They will also chop ice. The likes of your cuisipro, sunbeam and others are not really suited to choppng - they are more for liquidising soft foods - they cannot be compared to the Bamix which is professional quality. I guess it depends on what you expect from your appliance at the end of the day.
