Good to know you & Kathy are living it up while the rest of us poor sods keep the country running in your esteemed absence ;)

I'm sitting in the lounge 20 meters from Pakawau beach with waves crashing too ... only difference is here it's about 20 degrees cooler & we have horizontal rain hitting the ranchslider!

you cookies worried about food prices in NZ. . milk 14. 80 for 2 litres. . 8. 70 for 2 litre orange juice. . water 7. 00 a litre bottle. . coke 4. 80 1 . 5 litre... 250 gram chocolate 11. 70. . 2 litre of budget brand soya oil 18. 70. . and the wages for a supermarket worker is 8. 00 bucks an hour... how do they live ? nz poatoes 30. 00 a sack. . capsicum 18. 10 kg. . and they all look wizzened. . All imported. . but the good news was stubbies were 2. 50 each at the Game fishing club last night... Going to
TE ARIKI tonite as reccommended and used by the locals... If the locals go there , must be good food...

Sounds like you're having a great time Fisher. You'll probably find there are cheaper food markets the locals use - there certainly were in Fiji.

I'm sitting here in Melbourne fisher - but not as warm as you! Still it looks to be quite a reasonable day and at least not raining. Enjoy the sun!

Looking forward to Melbourne in August, though most of it will be work, the break will be nice.

No the food in Rarotanga is expensive all over. Only the fresh fruit and some of the locally grown vegetables are cheaper at the market.

I was warned, and took a supply of snacky type foods with me but I needn't have worried, because diet or not, fresh papaya and pineapple drenched in fresh limes picked off the hotel trees are not going begging when I'm around.

fisher, ask the chef if he/she will make you a soup from fresh grated green papaya. It is a favourite of Cook Islanders and may be the same in Rarotonga.

Kiri. . no the suoermarket is where the locals buy from to supply their small shops. . te ariki meal... two steiny beers, one glass wine... (been drinking back at resort so kept drinking down). . huge chilli meal with nacho's, sour cream. . and half a chicken, beautifully cooked, with lots of veges, cauli pumpkin mashed spud sweet potato carrots and whole beans drenched in gravy... 32. 50 the lot. .
Real home cooked type meal full of the locals, who greeted us and sang songs... brilliant evening...
nzhel. . love melbourne for its variety of food... great place to be if you are a foodie. . enjoy your stay...
buzzy. . too many places to try we missed last time... locals said they like to asked re their fruit... they sell a lot to earn monies for their meagre earnings... and sell a lot roadside...
Bit breezy thn last time keeping the tempp down to an acceptable level so very pleasant... eating too much as you do...

Hope you get to go fishing John!

Poor locals in that case Fisher! It was even worse in New Caledonia, the prices were horrific. $10 for a Coke, $30 for a pair of rubber jandals, $18 for a hamburger. And that was 10 years ago. One meal we had was $300 each for the food only (a seafood banquet) - luckily we had vouchers.

fisher, Jun 24, 7:05pm
been rough as... last few days... had my days of being beaten about on boats lol... too scared to book as it may not abate... . Ill just eat it thanks... heheheheslabs of broadbill and tuna on a huge hot plate with roaring fire underneath. . then bananas sliced longways in half on hot plate...cooked till caramelised... . sweet as...

winnie231, Jun 24, 7:08pm

Sounds terrible! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

fisher, Jun 24, 7:09pm
kiri... we love NCAL... our fav place because of the food... going back soon and we found some magic places to dine out... we had all day to nosey about and spent 2 hours in the supermache just reading labels... french bougelaise and cheeses with bagettes kept the hunger pangs away and we toured right around the island and found reasonable places

Are you trying to make us jealous, as we sit here, with a temp around 9 degrees and rain persisting down outside? . Bah humbug - yer've succeeded! :-D

We're taking our usual a tad later this year. We're off the end of August, thinking and hoping that when we come back, winter will be over!

Are there cooking classes [of local foods] to be found in Rarotonga? A friend did one in Bali while on holiday and loved it. Enjoy there you two. Cheers :-)
