I have the first Sunbeam crockpot they made and would like to get a modern slow cooker about 4. 5 to 5. 5 litres What do people suggest. I use the Allison Holst crockpot book and the Joan Bishop books the most.

I had the original Sunbeam one for years too until I killed it from overuse, since then I've tried an oval Breville one and a Breville Banquet Maker and they cook way faster than the original crockpots. My husband suggested the other day that we get another Sunbeam one and that's what I'd suggest for you too. It's a reliable brand and I notice that a lot of the celebrity cooks seem to use Sunbeam as well - if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me lol

Alyson Gofton said this morning there is very little difference between them but to be careful not to get one with too high a wattage.

Get a oval crockpot. I find can then fit whole chicken in or piece of roast meat. I have a breville crockpot that I got at a good price from Briscoes sale. Anyway if you have fly buy points then you may be able to get a crockpot through having sufficient points.

Hi everyone, I'm in the same boat! My ancient one is dying so we're replacing it asap. I also heard Allyson G this morning on newstalk ZB - I emailed Kerre and asked her to ask Allyson while she was on air - no reponse, have also emailed Allyson on her ecook site this afternoonIn her new book Allyson says she found the best models have a 230 - 270 wattage range and explains why, but no brand mentioned - probably not the done thing. Anyway my question is what brand has this wattage? The machine on the cover of her book is stainless steel with what looks like a black insert and a black oval dial with off - keep warm - low - high on it. Anyone help? Thanks.

ok... i use to have an orignal round crockpot but had to replace it, so i bought an oval one and found out tonight that my new 'slow cooker' is NOT a 'crockpot'. my slow cooker cooks food a lot faster and had i known this i would have never purchased it! ! ! !

in the nz womans weekly this week, theres a cooking section on crockpots frpm joan bishop and she has said. . 'That the new generation of slow cookers operate at higher temps than old-style crockpots, keep this in mind when reading recipes and adjust cooking times to suit, '
And i can confirm this ie . . a rice pudding in my 'slow cooker' takes half the time to cook. and my macaroni cheese in done in 1 hr compared to 2 1/2 hrs in a crockpot. The high temp gets things boiling.
Good luck with your choice.

More from Allyson Gofton on wattages - she says that slow cookers with a wattage of 230 - 270 don't boil on high, but bubbles plopped evenly around the edge, while on low the sauces murmered along slowly, making all day cooking possible without the worry of overcooking. She also says her times are a guide so, like Winnie, you may need to amend the times to suit the wattage and capacity of your slow cooker. That's the sort I want - just need to find the brand.

I went to one of Allyson Goftons Press Release thingymebobs and she said then that the best ones she found were the old round ones (Ralta, Sunbeam etc) and the el-cheapos from the supermarket! Thee sort of thing Countdown has for $25.
I have a Breville Flybuys jobby from 3 years ago and i wouldn't recommend it. It cooks too fast (especially with a braise in it - spread out over that size) and we have to cover it with foil.
One last thing - I did buy Allysons book and I do thoroughly recommend it - I have used ita lot, but never yet in the crockpot!

Mine is an old Sunbeam Crock Pot and I just checked the wattage - 230W. I hope it doesn't die as it sounds like it may be hard to get lower wattage ones now and I find this one cooks everything just right.

I have the old original Sunbeam too. Hubby is a sparky, and its had the lid replaced twice (now has a glass instead of the original plastic one), new plug and new switch. Basically most things can be replaced or fixed on it. I have my Mum's one here and its a newer Russel Hobbs. Its a black oval one. Quite disappointing though. Its quite lightweight, the lid is very light and it just doesn't do the same job. The old ones are certainly better. If I had to replace the Sunbeam I would try and get the same, or find a second hand one I think.

We just got a Russell Hobbs yesterday and it is the small one and is 160 watts 3. 2ltr capacity We have seen them in cafe's and they all said they loved their RH ones and they were reliable so hope this works we have the old sunbeam one and we use it alot but we wanted a 2nd one for soups so will be interesting to see how it compares Does anyone else have a Russell Hobbs and do they like them?

I have a cheap old Briscoes Zip brand. Easy on the pocket and still going well after 5 years. I know (from working at Briscoes in the past), that Zip is not usually known as a favourable brand, but the crockpots were rarely returned as faulty and if they were, it was an instant new one if you kept the receipt.

Mine still going but I lent it to my step daughter and now it is cracked, soup leaked out yesterday (I did notice there was a crack in the glaze). Did any of you keep the bowls?

I also have a Zip large oval one from Briscoes- use is almost daily and have had it for many years- from memory got it for half price for about $59. 00I can do chickens in it if having a crowd around- at the moment making pea and ham soup in it from the bones of the Xmas ham I had in the freezer. Makes a large amount which I will freeze. We make casseroles etc in it and freeze for later. Can also do a forequarter of lamb and hogget in it- all the fat comes out and the meat falls off the bone. I had a Monier crockpot before and that lasted for many years too- was far too small though, I wish the large oval ones were around when the kids were still home.

I had a Ralta Crockpot since they first came out. I wont explain what happened to it, but it served me well over the years up until a month ago. I decided to buy a oval Sunbeam 4lts. It has nodgels on the top of the pot. I have found it alot slower to cook with. I like the oval shape, but prefer the old crockpot.
