hi there, if you type finger food in the search box on the left and then in the date posted click on the arrow and then anytime you may get some ideas. What sort of people, if you have a fish and chip shop handy perhaps with the cold weather a good feed of fish and chips and sausages, some bread and butter would be ok. sometimes the fish and chip shops will do smaller bite sized bits of fish and cut the sausages up also.

Hi Hollie, the "old temperamental oven" would have me running to the supermarket for some cakes and slices! Or, bribe someone who bakes well to provide you with some goodies in return for something you can do... Also, a plate (or a tray, if you are feeding 30) of fresh fruitwith some chocolate scattered in between, is easy, reasonably cheap, and popular :)

Dad suggests you could make a big pile of club sandwiches! Pikelets are economical and don't require an oven. 1 cup self-raising flour or (1 cup plain flour and 1 tsp baking powder sifted together)pinch salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 2 tbsps sugar, 1 egg, 1/2 cup milk, 60g melted butter. Combine flour, salt and soda in small mixing bowl. Add sugar, egg and milk. Whisk with fork till all combined and no lumps of flour. Place tbsps of mix onto a hot, well greased frypan. Cook until bubbles appear and then turn over to cook other side until golden. This should make about 24, just double quantity if you want more. Serve with jam and whipped cream.

Or you could make Cinnamon pinwheels ! 3 cups selfraising flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 125g butter (about 4 tbsp), 2 tbsp water, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp vinegar, 1 cup brown sugar, 2-4 tsp cinnamon, 2-4 tsp mixed spice. Place flour and baking powder in bowl. (If using plain flour add 1 tsp baking powder per cup of flour). Put butter and water in separate bowl and heat until butter has melted. Pour 1 cup milk and add vinegar to milk, then add milk/vinegar mix to butter/water. Then add all liquid ingredients to dry ingredients. Mix well to a soft dough and roll out thinly onto baking tray. Combine brown sugar and spices and spread over scone mix. Roll into cylinder then slice into 2cm thick rounds and place on tray. Bake at 180-200 deg C for 1215 mins.

Here is one of the favourites I use for the kids parties... Quick and easy and I belt out a batch if I find the kids have eaten all the bread and left me short for school lunches again.
Easiest pikelets of all (My grandkids make them) Put in one bowl 2 cups of self raising flour and 4 tablespoons of castor sugar In another bowl Beat together about 1 1/2 cups tepid water and 2 eggs Add wet mix to dry mix and beat until smooth Place in spoonfuls into a hot greased pan or griddle until golden and flip. Makes about 24... but you can make them smaller and more ladylike by using smaller spoonfuls. Serve with jam and whipped cream. Its an old tried and true favourite
Or you can also try making up some deviled eggs... They are always a favourite and look really nice on the table, especially on a bed of fresh lettuce

The chip and dip platter is good, however you can dolly it up a bit. besides chips, you can use celery and carrot sticks.
For something different other than the old nestle reduced cream and onion soup... I add chopped parsely or chives etc... Or I use seafood soup and add surimi and a small amount of chopped prawns etc.

if you have any old sliced bread spread each slice with garlic or herb butter(make your own) roll up and place all of them on tinfoil, fold up tinfoil and cook like garlic bread. if you have onions and beef stock powder you could fry onions in butter or marg until browned add water and beef stock to taste, could always put very finely chopped cabbage/silverbeet to soup

we often have scones for morning tea. best made same day though. leave whole. supply a large jar of jam and a bowl of whipped cream. everyone helps themselves, some dont have cream for instance. other thing that goes down well are sausage rolls, buy those frozen log things. slice quite thinly, cook (even in a not so good oven should be ok) and supply a bowl of tomato sauce.

with the pre made frozen sausage rolls, try cutting them about the thickness of a gingernut put them meat side down on an oven tray on the top put a little relish, some grated cheese and bake, you could even make a cheese mix up of grated cheese, relish, chopped onion and mushroom, have oven around 180 to bake and just keep your eye on them after 10 mins.

I just wanted to say thank you for putting this recipe up. I can make light sponges, gateaux, pastries etc, but much to my frustration could never make nice pikelets. People would tell me their 'secrets' and I would go home to try, but no, nothing like their light fluffy melt in the mouth pikelets.
Well, with yours - I suspect the secret being the tepid water - I can now make pikelets, so thank you! . Often with baking/cooking - all we need is one little hint and all our problems are solved :-)
Warm pikelets have been very much appreciated by the menfolk coming in off the farm for morning tea on these bitterly cold mornings. [I am telling them to make the most of it as the novelty might wear off soon meaning I will stop making them! ]. I have the leftovers in the freezer too. So ta muchly :-)
