What do I do with persimmons?

justdelite, May 31, 12:25pm
One of our elderly neighbours came over with a bag full and I didnt want to be rude but I am looking at them wondering what on earth to do with them. . I guess I need to try one! Anyone have a recipe? !

Eat them raw! Just peel the skins off and slice them across in thin 'biscuit-like' slices and enjoy the delicious flavour and texture before they get over-ripe. They should be 'al dente'. Some people do let them get mushy, pop the tops, put some yoghurt on and eat them that way, but I find the texture off-putting.

It will be the tomato-shaped persimmons you've been given; the other variety, a different shape, is very astringent and will take the skin off your tongue!

I have tried persimmon recipes - baking, relish etc, but the flavour is bland once cooked and always disappointing.

Eat them... fresh NOW! I wish I had an elderly neighbour like yours...

Here's a great fruit salad - two persimmon (peeled and sliced/diced - you need to remove the core), two or three nashi pears, five or six feijoas, and a sliced banana. Mix it all up in a salad bowl, and give it a real good douse with some freshly squeezed lemon juice.
It's a fabulous fruit salad - the taste is quite delicate and so much more sophisticated than normal fruit salad.

They make a nice salad, peel slice into wedges, or dice, sprinkle over nuts, seeds, and a light dressing.

We love them fresh too. . chilled even better! Peel and eat like an apple - I have a friend who eats the skin too. .

We also like them in a salsa. . - chop in pieces as big was you choose (we prefer chunky bite sized pieces). . add chopped fresh veges or fruits to your taste - we toss a little apple cider vinegar through as a dressing. . delicious any time of the year.

Red onion or spring onions are good in the salsa, as well as chopped tomato, cucumber, sweet corn kernels, apple (we leave the skin on), capsicum, carrot, raw beetroot (grate or chop), celery, young beans, etc. .

Some pickle or relish can be added to. . yum!

We love them. . they grow across from a generous neighbour and 7 homes share the fruit from the one tree - I've planted grapes to share with them all too. . I've just planted a persimmon here, and we're looking forward to harvests to come. . highly recommended. .

hiya, an Iranian lady was buying some walnuts and said back home they make a hair dye/tonic out of that black covering of walnuts and persimmons (not sure which bit of the persimmons).

hey i would give it a go, beats 10$ a pack for something originally tested on animals:)
