I purchased some frozen fish from Countdown today called Basa. I asked at the counter what it was and they didn't know, so I went on line andit appears it is really catfish. Does anyone know its country of origin because the blog I read said it was farmed in Thailand in less than clean ponds. The fillets are quite large, and the flesh is soft and creamy. Personally I didn't like it and even if it was a safe fish to eat I probably wouldn't buy it again but at $8. 95 a kg relatively cheap. I am very wary of food outlets renaming fish so that we don't know what they really are - so we can make our own choices.

Supermarkets should be made to clearly show the country of origin. . or at least make sure staff selling this stuff clearly know where its from

Humm, Super market fish monger advise - Q. What would you do with this type of fish? A. You would cook it... Well not much more I could say after that... lol

a super helpful fish monger - NOT! ! ! ! ! - unless the fish is super fresh and being used for sashimi, isn't that what one normally does with any fish? so miss2006, did you buy any of the fish and if so what did YOU do with that type of fish? :-))

Well if you are worried about pollution then don't buy ANY shrimp or prawns in NZ - as they ALL come from farmed dirty ponds in Vietnam, Thailand and the Phillipines.
The farmers there MUST make money from them - after they took out loans to dig the ponds and line them with plastic and buy the stock and buy the fish food and the pumps etc etc. So if any of the prawns get sick they will get dosed with heaps of stuff some of which I wouldn't use on my aquarium fish.
In Europe there were several scandals with big residues of banned chemicals present in prawns and shrimp from these pond farming systems. So I am now very wary of any "specials" in the supermarkets here ...
Once a year at Xmas we get the "banana prawns" from Australia (wild caught) in the shops here - and this is when I stock up and freeze for the year.

Pesticide and other residues in Chinese farmed fish: 31 samples were assessed in 2007, including anchovy, fishballs, prawns and shrimps.
Out of these 9 tested positive for nitrofurans (an antibiotic) and 6 for chemical dyes, but "not at levels considered a health hazard" by our lovely authorities ...
However one of these antibiotics, nitrofuran, is banned from use in food-producing animals in the European Union and in the United States because it is considered to be a carcinogen ...
See my post #8 above.
