Where to find Tahini?

holly-rocks, Dec 3, 4:52am
I've been trying to find tahini at the supermarket and I just cant seam to see it anywhere, maybe I need to go to spec savers!
Is it in the chiller section at the supermarket or somewhere else?

I am wanting to make my own hummus, i have lots of ideas in my head and want to experiment :)

Thank you.

I substitute peanut butter for tahini, so no use asking me lol

I make hummus without tahini - it's not imperative however I can't think where you would get it in supermarket? my local wholefood store sells it though here in Palmy. It's just ground up sesame seeds. Somebody will know, my brain has gone blank sorry!

Yes agree really nice with peanut butter too.

Ok just remembered. Organic aisle or with chutneys and pickles.

Have an idea the Bin Inn used to have it as do health food shops.

Usually in the Organic aisle

Awesome! Thanks so much all for your reply’s :) I’ll check out the organic aisle next time, no wonder I couldn’t find it. Don’t know why I thought it was a chilled item.

countdown have but it is hard to find

dibble35, Dec 3, 5:36pm
I bought it at countdown a few months ago - they had 2 diff sorts, hulled and unhulled. I remember I bought the wrong one, apparently the other one tastes much nicer but i cant remember which one i got. Ended up giving it away to a friend who wanted it as i couldnt use it even in the nice dressing recipes a few people on here suggested.

Unhulled is the bitter one, but better for you - sometimes called "butter."

Thanks guys, I'm off to the supermarket now, hopefully I will find some :)

Chantal Organics do a really nice one our local Pak n Save stocks in the health food section. Made from whole, unhulled sesame seeds and it's lovely!

And the International section. I'm fairly certain I have seen it in the peanut and nut butter section as well.

I have always found it in the coolers near the cheeses etc

Our local new world has it on shelf next to peanut butter

Holly-rocks when I'm doing a stint in Dunedin I buy it from Taste Nature in High street. If you haven't checked them out it may be worth a visit. I'm not a fan of peanut butter rather than tahini as the taste is totally different so I always use tahini and I rate Taste Nature's as good as Piko's in Christchurch.

When you blitz your chickpeas for the hummus just throw in a tsp of sesame seeds as well. Tahini is just sesame seeds and olive oil and a bit of salt
