Please can someone shed some light ? I have asked several people if it is at all possible to roast/bake in a slow cooker most have said no. If it is possible please can you tell me how to go about it. Does the meat etc. need to be bagged with a dash of oil ? Have not tried to roast this way before but as there is no cooker in my rented house I feel it time to give it a go.
Thank you in advance.

You most certainly can. What you can do is to coat the meat in a mix of flour, salt and pepper and brown the meat in oil, in a fry pan, turning it until all sides are brown. Turn the slow cooker to high before you start working with the meat as slow cooker needs to be hot and add meat and cook for around 6 hours. I had a quick read of Alison Holst slow cookers and crockpots cook book. Have you heard of pot roasting? Its using a large lidded pot and doing the same but cooking it in the pot. After browning add a little liquid and cook on low for a for a time. The meat is delicious. I hope this helps.

Your roast in slowcooker will be nice and moist, but will not have a crispy skin like oven roasted. Pack your chunks of veg round the sides of the cooker, I find they are not as crispy as oven done ones. Visit the op shops for a electric frypan for your crispy roast and veg, if you haven't a oven.

funnyface01, of course you can use your slow cooker, but don't expect it to come out as crispy as an oven roast. I often use my slow cooker for larger pieces of 'not so tender' meat cuts & even tender meat cuts, if I'm busy & can't be faffed or I am away all day& want a meal soon after getting home. I'd brown the meat first, but it's not absolutely necessary. malcovy has it covered pretty well in post #2. It's not the 'purist's' way to do it, but hey, if you are happy with the end result & that's all that matters. btw, with no cooker in your rented house, have you got an electric fry pan & hot plate . all you need to be creative. you only need to ask here & those of us who have lived without such luxuries as an oven/stove, will help. Experiment & google Dame Ali Holst's slow cooker recipes & Robyn Martin has a few goodies, as well.Good luck & best wishes.

. I am wondering why there is no oven. I thought it was mandatory for a rented house to have an oven. comments please
