Pavlovas from supermarkets. How long do they keep?

clivehell, Nov 25, 7:55pm
If I got one now,how long would it last for.Still in the box.Till Xmas?
thanks.

buzzy110, Nov 25, 8:51pm
Does it have a best before/use by date on it?

sampa, Nov 25, 8:57pm
Check the date prior to purchasing as buzzy has suggested and, if all good till post the big day, make sure to store in an ant proof container in a cool area. A sturdy container will also help if it gets knocked off a shelf or something heavy inadvertently ends up on top of it - easily damaged/squashed.

I didn't have a look at that. Will see when I go in next time. Last xmas I left it too late to get one. and I am not making one.Last time I did that it was flat.
Thanks for that.

x1
have heard that they freeze well . but no first hand experience sorry

We bought one for visitors a year ago - it is still sitting in the cupboard and no cooling and looks like the day I bought it LOL

Have not opened or smelled it, but visually completely unchanged .

Check the "best before date" to be sure though LOL

They do freeze well, and you can whip them out of the freezer and decorate them at the last minute, because they cut easily when frozen as well. I always have one in the freezer for emergencies.

Good to know thanks punkinthefirst.

Bit scary that they keep so long - sound like those things you hear about McD's getting unearthed from random places and still looking as good as new. Must be all the sugar in the pavs that add to their keeping abilities. Just keep the pesky ants out. last year I had one stashed away as a back-up and the little critters found it and had a party of their own. :(

Into freezer it shall go - given above advice - if I purchase another this year!

cowells pavs are fantastic better than any home made recipes I've had and I have tasted a fair few.

Thanks everyone for your input. Will make sure to look at dates when I go
back to supermarket on Friday.

Haha sampa. back in the day when we got married (50 years ago, nearly), the thing to do was to put away the top layer of your wedding cake for a christening cake for the first child. So I packed the cake up carefully in a box, and put it in a cupboard. We moved 12 months later. Out of the cake box jumped a very fat and very pregnant mouse! She'd built a nest in the basket of flowers on the top of the cake, and was living on top of her food! Clever mouse! (And yes, I tossed the cake out!)

sampa, Nov 26, 10:23am
punkinthefirst ! You're nearly 50 years married? Never mind the mouse (funny story that it was) when do you celebrate this wonderful occasion? And what plans do you have to mark it?

punkinthefirst, Nov 27, 1:07am
50 years married, but 20 years widowed, so no plans to celebrate. I may take myself out for lunch. Married on my birthday, too, so it takes a bit of running away from, LOL.

veejay13, Nov 27, 6:35am
Would it keep in the fridge (as opposed to the freezer)? I'm thinking of how to avoid those pesky ants.

ffloss, Nov 27, 6:59am
I buy them several weeks before Xmas and put them in the freezer. They are fine. Make sure they don't get squashed . Enjoy

sampa, Nov 27, 7:07pm
Sorry to hear that punkinthefirst but don't ignore your birthday - go out for that lunch and have a lovely time. Our anniversary is the day after my birthday which seems to confuse hubby terribly. ever year lol. Too much brain strain for some men so I've taken to organising something myself. Fails on the romance front but at least I get to do something I enjoy. :)

Happy Birthday for whenever it is!

punkinthefirst, Nov 28, 5:45am
Yep. fail on the romance front, all right. Hubby remembered neither my birthday NOR our wedding anniversary, LOL. (It's also close to Valentines Day). He more than made up for it in other ways, though, so I have nothing to complain about. Life's way too short to be sad - I'd far rather celebrate it!

samanya, Nov 29, 4:30am
I did the same, bought one, didn't use it & it looked the same for months & months. I turfed it, in the end.
I have since learned how to make a half decent pav so won't have to buy one again.

karlymouse, Nov 29, 10:37am
Ha. thats a great story. I remember those days. little metal boxes to send pieces of cake to people who could not attend the wedding. my sisters were married in the 1950s and this happened then.
