Because "lilyfield"can survive on $5 a day and would not pay that much for food. He/she has talked about that here for years.

No way

Why not lilyfield!
My daughter has and it's going to be interesting. It isn't being delivered until very late afternoon on the 23rd - the turkey is frozen - and my daughter is going to stuff and cook it to be ready 2p.m. Christmas Day.She has very seldom cooked a turkey, though a proficient cook in every other way, reason being that I do it every year haha!
I have seen the menu cursorily and there are some complicated little things in there. I am seriously wondering if it is all going to be worth the total cost.I thought if anyone in recipes was doing it too it would be interesting to exchange comments about how it all went.
No!I am not upset because I have been demoted from cooking the turkey lol, and I might have to help by doing the pomegranate salad so we shall see!

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Christmas Bags had sold out, so they must appeal to a lot of her customers.
Just wondering how long a frozen turkey takes to defrost, if it's still frozen less than 48 hours before it's due to be eaten!
lilyfield,

Why not! The cost of course, paying someone to make a menu and do the shopping for me! Got to have a pretty good income to do that.

I felt the same as you, initially, but when I gave it some thought.it could be a God send for people who couldn't get to the supermarket, for whatever reason. Not everyone can pop into a car & shop around. It's not my scene, either, but I wouldn't poo poo the idea .who knows, one day we might all be only too pleased totake up the offer of MFB.

I wanted it but it sold out pretty quickly.

I would probably have done it if I was going to be at home after Christmas Day to eat the leftovers

Yes that's true but it's a bit of a one way street situation - in order to earn that great income that allows purchase of something like a 'My Food Bag' it's likely that the person can afford it due to the long hours they spend doing so (earning the dollars). So less time to shop, bargain hunt and get creative with food ideas for the big day.Regardless, what suits one is not always going to suit another and no one should be critiqued for spending more or less to create a day that meets their needs.Tis the season and all that.
Happy Christmas to all no matter what your plans - or even lack of plans - also good sometimes. :)

That would be my concern too as depending on size I'd say 2 days is cutting it fine.
nauru,
Dec 23, 6:31pm
I would say that it is probably ideal for career minded people who have little time to shop around for the Christmas Day menu.I'm sure that they would gladly pay the price to avoid the added hassle & stress.

I will certainly let everyone know how it goes now that I know there is some interest. Of course the thawing of the turkey is my main concern too. It's a 4.5 (I think).Anyway the instructions and recipes arrive at the same time as the bag so it will be interesting to see what tips and hints they contain.
The whole bag is $319 I think-and yes my daughter and son-in-law are well in a position to afford it, and as someone said earlier, they work damned hard and have achieved so it's their choice.Being a mother hen I suppose but I do wonder how on earth she is going to get everything done, from canapés to dessert in one and a half days. The good side, I live just down the road so available to give a hand if necessary.Of course I'll be doing extra dishes anyway and hopefully so will her daughter and stepdaughters though they tend to be a bit haphazard lol! Anyway-have a wonderful Christmas everyone, hope you manage to spend time with all those you love and cherish, and find lots of cherishing for yourselves too.May 2016 bring contentment and good health to you all!

I thought a Turkey took 2-3 days to thaw in the fridge before you can cook it.
sarahb5,
Dec 23, 7:24pm
Just leave it on the bench or in the sink to defrost - I never defrost in the fridge, it takes too long and a turkey takes up too much room
sarahb5,
Dec 23, 7:25pm
Nadia Lim's recipes for My Food Bag are very easy to follow
esther-anne,
Dec 23, 7:34pm
That's good sarahb5.Thanks!Have you tried one and used the recipes!
Have to say - I always believed leaving a turkey out of the fridge to thaw was strictly a no-no because of the risk of bacteria developing!
I am pretty old now and have never done that.Maybe I'm very behind the times.

Yes - I use My Food Bag 3 days a week. Turkey defrosted on the bench or in the sink is find - you're going to cook it, the only risk is if you don't cook it through properly.

Oh ok-new to me and very intriguing as it flies in the face of most recommendations.(that looks like wrong spelling I'm thinking lol).
So probab;ly that's what my daughter will be intructed to do!
Good to have feedback from a person who is using My Food Bag, thanks.
Must go and take in this next contraction (watching ;One Born Every Minute in between coming here lol!)

In this weather if I need to thaw large items I leave out over night and they are usually thawed and fine to use. I wouldn't leave on bench all day though. I looked at My Food bag for christmas and would have loved to have gotten it but as there are only 2 of us it was a bit over the top. I'm keen to try one of the others though.

It would have lasted you until nextChristmas I reckon.I'm looking forward to seeing it this evening, especially the chioggi beetroot for the salad which looked a bit special when I Googled it. Ý.

My oven has a defrost setting (I've never had the need to use it) perhaps your daughters has the same and she could defrost turkey that way!
