Ummm - not sure what type of beans you are using for that experiment!

Maybe the 4 weeks old ones from the supermarket (they were $22.50 a kilo today at Pak'n'Save - which is supposedly the cheapest supermarket).

If I try that with mine fresh from the garden they will disintegrate at about 15 minutes .

Same with ours, and little beans around 15cm take only a couple of minutes, but I have used very mature runner beans (i.e. with clearly defined seeds) in braised dishes and they are great.And, as you know, mature legumes need to be cooked really thoroughly if they are not to set off digestive upsets.

Yes I can imagine older runner beans in a 30 minute stew.
