I found it in a Masterchef NZ recipe for Pork, Cashew and Egg stirfry that sounds lovely, 'cept for this weird ingredient - Dr Wikipedia says something about sweet sauce but I dunno - what shall I use? any thoughts?

It's Indonesian soy sauce - you could use ordinary soy and add brown sugar...

Thanks Kirinesha. Would I use light or dark soy - and perhaps a tablespoon of brown sugar for a cup of soy?

I just checked the bottle in my pantry at it's 76% palm sugar! So looks like you'd use 1/4 cup of soy sauce to 3/4 cup of brown sugar! It is very rich through so you don't use much.

Good Morning! Do you know where I can buy the stuff? Asian food shops perhaps? Is it called something else as well?

It's actually called Kecap Manis not Ketchup Manis. It is a type of Soy sauce, but is generally both thicker & sweeter.

Hi, if you are close to a Dutch shop, go in and have a look, as Dutch people tend to eat Indonesian food a lot and use Sweet Soy sauce or Ketjap Manis (manis = sweet). It is quite yummy, made by CONIMEX and I believe they use molasses (sp). Unfortunately, we cannot use it anymore as it contains wheat and we eat gluten free. As far as I know, all Dutch shops carry the Conimex range. Cheers Sophie

Accroul, it commonly gets called both. I've seen it on menus in Indonesia called Ketchup Manis and Kecap Manis.

Yes to the Asian food shops, although there is an Asian Home Gourmet one called Sweet Soy Sauce which is made in Thailand but very similar i. e: mostly sugar! This should be available in most supermarkets.

I bought it from Moore Wilsons in the Hutt - the ABC one that is advertised in many of the Oz magazines. It is so good!

If you have an asian grocery store near you they will stock it and the prices are way way cheaper than supermarkets!

What a delish dish - it is the one from Masterchef with pork and capsicum. Fantastic - but now I have a huge bottle of Ketsup Manis - what else can I do with it? P. S I have already bought some more pork to make another dish of it... . .

Use it in marinades. I use it instead of soy and honey or brown sugar when making teryiaki sauce. I also have an awesome recipe for Sweet chilli aubergines which requests 5 teaspoons of sugar so I use ketsup manis and omit the sugar. I used it with hoisin sauce, ginger and garlic on pork steaks the other night and it was delish!
