sago and tapioca

these are desserts I remember from childhood but have never made myself. I picked some up from the supermarket last night and there is a recipe of sorts on the back of each packet. My questions is, can I cook these in a crock pot / slow cooker and how will that differ (apart from cooking time) to whats on the back of the packet?

can they be done in a crockpot? anyone done this before?

I don't have a crockpot any more, but I certainly think it is worth a try. I know one has to stand for a time when it is done stovetop to stop it sticking.

Take a look at Google. I have pulled one up for you. Slow Cooker Sago Pudding
Ingredients

Adapted from Not Your Mother’s Slow Cooker Cookbook

4 cups milk
1 cup sugar
½ cup sago
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 large eggs
Method

Grease the slow cooker bowl with butter. Combine milk, sugar, sago and vanilla in the slow cooker and whisk well to combine. Cover and cook on low setting for about 2 ½ hours – the milk will be absorbed and the pudding thickened. Most of the sago balls should be transparent with some still having a white dot at the centre.

Beat the egg well and stir the sago to break up any lumps. Spoon a few spoonfuls of the sago into the egg, stir well and then pour into the mixture in the cooker. Stir well to combine, cover and cook for another 30 minutes.

Turn off cooker and let the pudding cool partially covered for another 30 minutes. Serve the pudding warm with fruit or whipped cream. The remaining pudding can be stored covered in the refrigerator.
The Klutzy Cook Notes

* Tapioca can be substituted for sago.
* The recipe can be halved – use a small cooker and reduce initial cooking time to 1 ½ hours.
* Once cold, the pudding ‘sets’. If it is to be served as a cold dessert, pour into individual bowls before refrigerating.

when you say small pearl tapioca is that the sago. I have a packet of sago and a packet of tapioca. The sago is small and the tapioca is quitea bit larger. Can you buy smaller pearl tapioca?

my latest purchase is labeled sago and the balls about 2mm in diameter looks the same as small pearl Tapioca which I usually get.

Strictly speaking Purplegoanna its not my recipe but googled it a year back. Our family love it and its so easy I put it on when I get home from work for a lateish desert about 8. Also nice cold the next night. Never had a failure you can't miss does help it you give it a stir a couple of times during cooking though.
