monosodium glutamate is a white sodium type powder. often used by asian eateries to add flavour to food. it is one thing I avoid like the plague as it gives me migraines.

MSG is certainly used a lot in Asia, by the teaspoonful sometimes,but I steer clear of it.I don't get a bad reaction the way many people do, but I hate the way it makes everything taste the same and leaves an odd aftertaste.

Don't think they will sell it in the supermarket, but as mentioned, you'll get itin an Asian shop. When I was a kid my Mum use to use it for cooking Chinese food, I use to tip it in my hand and lick it off, it's a big NO NO these days, but millions of Chinese people still use it and are still alive.
