Kefir

Does anyone know if Kefir grains go "off" and if so how do you know? I lent mine to a friend to look after while I was away and she left them on the windowsill for 10 days with out feeding it. I have since washed them with fresh milk but not sure if they are still OK. I also froze some and they seem to be workingbut haven't mixed them together as was a bit unsure if I should use the former ones. Any one know?

I don't think that they will go off, but it may take a week or so of putting them in a small amount fresh milk each day . I have revived ones that have been kept in the fridge for a couple of months. Have a look at http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html#resilience

Thanks for that, Ive been washing in milk and also some boiled room temp water but they still smell a bit "sour." Its a bit more unpleasant than a normal sour milk smell. I may leave them in the fridgeto let them stabilize. I'm a bit nervous to drink the culture.
