Mulled wine

korbo, Jul 1, 4:19am
Does anyone have a good recipe for mulled wine.
I love it around 4pm in the winter.

I don't want a large amount that needs to be used straight away,
BUT a mix I can make up to last a couple of weeks.
thanks
I also made some plum liquer, and now on tasting, it is so so sweet.
is there anything I can do to lessen the sweetness.

Haha. I got my recipe book out planning to make some tonight.
1 bottle red wine. 1 each peeled & sliced orange & lemon. 1 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp ginger. 2 tsp allspice. 5 cloves. 3 cinnamon sticks.
2 star anise. 1/2 c sugar. 2/3 c brandy. 1/2 c water

Last time round I used this one
2 1/2 c orange juice. 4 c red wine. 3 cinnamon sticks. 8 whole cloves
1 lemon thinly sliced 1/2 orange thinly sliced. 3/4 c Br sugar. 1 c brandy
1 c boiling water
Preheat crockpot 20 mins. Combine sugar and water in crockpot, add remaining ingreds. Cover with lid, cook on low 3-4 hrs or high 1-2 hrs.

I am planning to do the first recipe tonight, method as per 2nd recipe, and see which I like better.

thank you, do you think you could keep it in the fridge, and then just heat a cup up when you want it.

korbo I know exactly what you mean re the Mulled Wine and wish I had a recipe I could share with you but I can recommend the following:-

http://prenzel.com/shop/Prenzel+Bar/Mixers/Mulled+wine+-+500mls+at+14+alc.vol.html

Yummy, easy and so handy when needing a lovely spicey warming drink of Mulled Wine and all it takes is some boiling water along with the concentrate, then sit back and sip away! . :-))

Edited to add. I have no connections to/with Prenzels so am definitely not trying to do a sales promo.

I don't bother refrigerating it, with all the alcohol in it, it keeps well. Last year I found 1 bottle I'd made in my pantry, was from the previous winter, still good to drink!
Just remember not to heat it to the point of killing the alcohol in it!

korbo, since my earlier post I've done a bit of searching and found this:-

although IMO it wouldn't be as convenient as the ready-made and just needing to be heated option or the bought concentrate. :-))

You must add 250 ml brandy as well. that's the secret to the "warm" feeling it gives. Don't. don't, let it boil at all. the alcohol content will be gone! There's a crock pot one somewhere if I can find it. good when there's a crowd.
1 cup boiling water
2 1/2 cups orange juice
4 cups red wine
1 cup brandy
3 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
1 smallish lemon thinly sliced
1/2 orange sliced thinly
3/4 cup brown sugar
Preheat crockpot for 20 minutes
Combine the sugar and water in crockpot and stir until sugar is dissolved
Add cinammon stick, cloves, wine, brandy and lemon and orange.
Cover with lid and cook on low / auto for 3-4 hours or on high for 1-2 hours.
The mixture must not boil.
Turn crockpot to low / auto and serve hot

made some up, but I was a bit heavy with the whole cloves.
Nearly all gone and slept like a baby last night, after having a small cupful around 10pm.
