m41, when I've made Sticky Date Pudding I have always baked it - just as is, i. e. in it's dish but not in a water bath. I do recall though, reading a recipe here on this TM MB (from juliewn I think) for a Steamed Sticky Date Pudding so I guess the answer to your question is "Yes" Sticky Date Pudding can be steamed but it can also be baked without being in a water bath.
