Tuna chowder - can I use kumara?

A cafe in Pukekohe used to make an amazing smoked fish and kumara pie

Not a single potato in the house (gulp! - bit stressful for someone of Irish descent, let me tell ya!) There are some golden kumara though - has anyone tried using these instead of potatoes!

Kumara is very nice in a smoked fish chowder but perhaps not so good in a fresh tuna version as the kumara might overpower the fish.

I've never used potato in any fish chowder so I just cannot picture it but if you need to use something starchy then have you considered rice!
