Can anyone recommend a recipe book for someone who wants to start out making Indian meals! Just pretty basic, and will progress from there.

Madhur Jaffrey's latest book, Curry easy, is very good, as are all her books.

Yes, the Curry Easy book is very good. It has a great list/description of all the key Indian spices, seasonings etc.Go to a shop that sells Indian supplies andstock up on the basics (generally better quality and cheaper than the supermarket versions) and you will find that many of them (cumin, coriander, turmeric etc) are used in many recipes. Also, consider doing a night class in Indian cooking if they are offered in your area. I found that a great way to pick up the basic skills and techniques and also obtained some excellent recipes from a very patient teacher too!
