Butter cake + topping!

Heya, I have never made butter cake before, do I ice the cake, or is it sweet enough without it! It is for a birthday, so I would prefer to ice it in some way. What are your thoughts on icing a butter cake! TIA

I love butter cake and it is nice enough left plain but for a birthday cake I would definitely ice it - probably just with something simple like a lemon or orange glace icing rather than butter cream
