Get a BBQ mat, easy to clean up afterwards, but tinfoil should be alright in the meantime.

Just use the hotplate as is, mess or no mess - still needs to be cleaned afterwards and is quite easy whilst it is still warm - hot just after finishing cooking.

Do what I do and forget to turn the BBQ off afterwards clean as next day when I go out to find bottle empty :)
