Buttermilk

does it matter if a recipe has buttermilk in ingredients and you use plain milk instead.

no, it doesn't.
Although I tend to use plain yoghurt if I have it instead.
Buttermilk gives a slightly tart taste IMO.

don't you just add a teaspoon of vinegar to 1 cup of milk to get buttermilk! or am i confusing this with something else lol

You're right cupcakes - I've used lemon juice and it's worked fine.Got that tip off here!=)

Yes redrose - add the lemon juice to the milk and let stand for 5 mins.

The smell of butter milk may be off putting, but it does not taint the cake, and makes it beautiful and moist, and if you have any left over, I love the pancake recipe on the side of the carton, they are a favourite here
