Can't remember where I saw it, but someone here said freeze the cake first... Another idea is a thin spread of apricot jam on first...

Another idea that I have seen done is to first coat the cake with a very thin layer of a plain butter icing, allow that to set/dry, then ice the cake as required. :-))
