My new recipe- but how to make it rise more?

Cheese scones, Modified it from Simple Baking Mix recipe... and although the taste was gorgeous, I wish they'd rise more.

3 quarters cup SBMix
3 quarters cup buckwheat flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 small tsp vegetable gum
pinch salt
pinch cayenne

50gm margerine
2 thirds cup grated cheese
half cup tepid milk

Preheat oven to 200deg C
Dust oven tray with SBMix
Sift dry ingredients into large bowl
Rub margerine into dry ingredients
Stir in cheese
Add milk and quickly mix to soft dough
Knead a few times then press into square 2.5cm thick
Cut into squares and place on tray.
Brush tops with milk
Bake 13-15mins.

Thanks for any hints you have.

more baking powder. In scones I use 2tsp to 1 cup of flour.

try 2 tsp cream of tartar and 1 tsp baking soda.
