from a recent edition of that's life magazine: Haven't had a chance to try it but sounds nice and similar to yours I think:

Kelly's steamed brown pudding
1/4 cup caster sugar
1/4 cup jam or marmalade
3/4 cup dates, finely chopped
1 1/2tsps bicarb soda
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 tsps vanilla essence
1 1/2 cups plain flour
1 1/2 tsps baking powder

in a small saucepan melt butter sugar, jam and dates.
Stir until combined then remove from heat.
Dissolve bicarb in milk and add to melted mix.
Add vanilla essence, sift over flour and baking powder. Mix well. Pour into a greased 6 cup pudding bowl. cover and steam for 11/2 - 2 hrs. over a pan of simmering water. Serve warm with custard.
Hope this is helpful.
