How long does nutmeg last?

cheapmike, Jul 2, 6:12am
I have some in a jar that is at least a couple of years old and now need to use some, it seems ok to look at and smell. any idea how long the whole nuts (or partially ground nuts) last? cheers

Most ground spices start to lose potency as soon as you grind them. Keep whole nutmegs and grate/grind as you need them. Given the labour and time and ingredients needed for a recipe, don't risk its success with ancient ground spices.

Don't be cheap, Mike ;)

I picked whole nutmeg and mace in the Carribean about 25 years ago - am now on the last ones and they are still fine.

Ground stuff wouldn't last longer than a year I would suspect!

Iv'e also got whole nutmegs from about 20 years ago. They still grate up to make great taste and scent on my milk puddings and various other foods. I reckon use the stored nutmeg in the jar. It will be fine. Give it a good shake up before you use it. Wake it up as it were, :-)

Thank heaps! Didn't want to waste them and won't now.

never buy it ground- the hole nuts last forever, just grate when needed. There are lovely little graters around with a compartment at the end to store the nut in it.
